PROJECT DETAILS
Situated on Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile, within the heart of the city’s World Heritage Zone, this project involved the design, construction, and full fit-out of a contemporary Adagio Aparthotel seamlessly integrated behind a carefully retained period façade.
The development required the demolition of the former Sailor’s Ark building and adjoining tenement, making way for a six-storey, 146-bed aparthotel that blends modern comfort with architectural heritage. Each aparthotel unit features self-contained kitchen facilities, providing guests with flexible, long-stay accommodation in one of the city’s most sought-after locations.
Location
At street level, the scheme includes five commercial units positioned along the newly created Sibbald Walk — a pedestrian route leading directly into a vibrant public plaza, contributing to the regeneration of the wider New Waverley district.
Occupying a prominent position at the southern end of the New Waverley site, the building stands approximately 12–14 metres above Calton Road, offering spectacular panoramic views across Calton Hill, Leith, Arthur’s Seat, and the city’s historic skyline.
This landmark development showcases McAleer & McGarrity’s expertise in delivering complex mechanical systems within heritage-sensitive environments, combining precision engineering with respect for Edinburgh’s rich architectural legacy.
